President Barack Obama awarded the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, to Army Ranger Sergeant First Class Leroy Arthur Petry today. Petry is only the second living, active duty service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

When President Barack Obama cited cost as a reason to bring troops home from Afghanistan, he referred to a $1 trillion price tag for America’s wars.
Staggering as it is, that figure grossly underestimates the total cost of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the US Treasury and ignores more imposing costs yet to come, according to a study released on Wednesday.

Army Sgt. J.D. Williams of Auburn was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan last October, so he was used to being in dangerous situations.
“For a while there, we were getting shot at every other day,” Williams recalled this week.
