Microsoft said Tuesday it sold 40 million licenses for its Windows 8 operating system in the first month after a launch which got a mixed reception.
One of the new heads of the Windows unit, Tami Reller, made the announcement to an analysts’ meeting and Microsoft provided the information on its Windows blog.

Research firm IHS says Microsoft and Apple are garnering the highest profit margins for their tablets, followed to a lesser extent by Google and then Amazon.
Microsoft’s first self-made tablet, the Surface, costs about $267 in parts and labor when excluding its optional keyboard cover. It went on sale Oct 26 priced at $499, for a profit margin of around 46%. Surface comes with a 10.6-inch (26.9-centimeter) screen measured diagonally, and can access the Internet only through Wi-Fi. The price is for its base model with 32 gigabytes of memory.

MICROSOFT on Wednesday kicked off a contest aimed at turning the tables on hackers by offering big money prizes for innovative tactics to foil cyber-attacks.
The US software titan launched the premier BlueHat Prize competition at a major Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas.

Bill Gates plotted to grab Microsoft shares from his cancer-stricken business partner Paul Allen, the software firm’s co-founder has claimed in a new memoir. Painting a unfavorable view of Gates and his rise to the pinnacle of global business, Allen details Gates’ 1982 scheme to “rip me off,” just as Microsoft was becoming a computing powerhouse with its MS-DOS system.

Microsoft has sold more than 10 million Kinect systems for the Xbox 360 to retailers, the company announced Wednesday.
Kinect, a controller-free gaming system that competes with the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 Move, has been selling at an impressive rate since it launched in November.

MICROSOFT Corp is hoping to capitalise on the popularity of daily deals websites by incorporating them into its Bing search site for smart phones.
On the updated Bing mobile site, people can click on a ‘deals’ link to see the top offers for their city from Groupon, LivingSocial and about 200 other daily coupon sites, Microsoft said. Another click shows nearby stores, restaurants and other merchants currently offering a deal, based on the phone’s current location. People can also use Bing to search local deals by category.

Nokia will get billions of dollars from Microsoft to ditch its current smartphone software in favour of Windows Phone 7, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said, in a defence of the deal.

THE world’s top mobile phone maker Nokia unveiled this week a radical new strategy by partnering with Microsoft, but warned of substantial job cuts around the world.

Software giant Microsoft has reportedly sued a former director of business development in a US state court, accusing him of stealing nearly $460,000 from the company.
According to a news report in ComputerWorld, the employee Robert D Curry tried to siphon off another $1.5 million before his scheme was uncovered.
In its complaint, Microsoft has alleged that Curry created a fake company called Blu Games and submitted bogus invoices for non-existent services.
