President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama say they have been mistaken for valet and wait staff on their journey to the White House despite the progress America has seen in race relations.
The First Couple sat down for a candid conversation with People magazine on racism in American amid a fervid debate on the issue after a raft of white-on-black killings. “There’s no black male my age, who’s a professional, who hasn’t come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn’t hand them their …

US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have reported assets worth between $US1.8 million ($A1.95 million) and $US7 million ($A7.57 million) for last year, with little difference from their previous year’s holdings, according to financial disclosure forms released today.
The forms, required by law, permit public officials to list their assets in broad ranges. As a result, a precise net worth is difficult to ascertain.
The forms show the largest jointly owned assets by the president and the first lady were Treasury notes worth between $1 million and $5 million. …

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday offered his “strong support” for the protection of Tibetans’ human rights in China as he defied protests from Beijing to meet the Dalai Lama.
With China warning that the meeting would derail ties between the world’s two largest economies, Obama took care to avoid any trappings of an official visit, receiving the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader in the Map Room of the White House residence and not the Oval Office where he usually talks to dignitaries.
The Dalai Lama, usually chatty and playful with foreign audiences, …

President Barack Obama on Friday called for an end to the government’s control of phone data from hundreds of millions of Americans, and he promised that “we will not monitor the communications of heads of state and government of our close friends and allies.”
The president said Friday he will end the program “as it currently exists.”
He called for extending some privacy protections to foreign citizens whose communications are scooped up by the U.S.
The moves are more sweeping than many U.S. officials had been anticipating.
Obama, in a highly anticipated speech after …

President Barack Obama will focus his State of the Union address on boosting job creation and economic growth at a time of high unemployment, underscoring the degree to which the economy could threaten his ability to pursue second-term priorities such as gun control, immigration policy and climate change.
Obama also may use Tuesday’s prime-time address before a joint session of Congress to announce the next steps for concluding the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
Obama’s State of the Union marks his second high-profile speech to the nation in …

U.S. President Barack Obama Tuesday delivered an unapologetic defense of American values and his under-fire Arab Spring policy, speaking to U.S. voters from a world stage at the U.N.
His Republican foe Mitt Romney also muscled in on the hoopla surrounding the annual U.N. General Assembly, striking a statesmanlike pose at the nearby New York gathering of ex-President Bill Clinton’s humanitarian organization.
The rivals jousted for foreign policy advantage a week before they clash in their first presidential debate, and as time ticks down to the election on Nov 6 in which …

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday voiced admiration for Japan’s resilience one year after its massive tsunami and vowed that the alliance between the two countries would remain “unshakeable.”
Obama said he and First Lady Michelle Obama “join all Americans in honoring the memory” of the 19,000 left dead or missing when one of the strongest earthquakes in modern times sent devastating seismic waves crashing into Japan.
“We continue to be inspired by the Japanese people, who faced unimaginable loss with extraordinary fortitude. Their resilience and determination to rebuild stronger than before …

Seizing an opportunity for historic progress in repressive Myanmar, President Barack Obama is dispatching U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to the long-isolated nation next month in an attempt to accelerate fledgling reforms.
The move is the most dramatic sign of an evolving relationship between the United States and Myanmar, also known as Burma, which has suffered under brutal military rule for decades. But Obama said Friday there had been “flickers of progress” since a new nominally civilian leadership took power in March.
“If Burma continues to travel down the road …

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) — The White House announced on Tuesday two new measures the Department of Education will start offering in January to help college graduates climb out of their student loan debt hole.
One of the proposals would push up the start date for more favorable terms on a special loan repayment program based on income, said White House domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes. Another measure would encourage graduates with two or more different kinds of federal loans to consolidate them and get a small break on interest rates.
Obama is expected …
