Google on Monday agreed to pay a nearly $8 million fine and open its Android mobiles to competing search engines in Russia in an antitrust settlement reached after two years.
The deal with Russia’s anti-monopoly service (FAS) came after Yandex, the country’s biggest search engine, complained Google had an unfair advantage by pre-loading its search engine on Android phones.

A joint European-Russian mission aiming to search for traces of life on Mars blasted off on Monday for the start of a seven-month unmanned space journey to the Red Planet.
A Proton rocket carrying the Trace Gas Orbiter to examine Mars’s atmosphere and a descent module that will conduct a test landing on its surface launched into an overcast sky at the Russian-operated Baikonur cosmodrome in the Kazakh steppe at 0931 GMT.

With 45% of senior management positions held by women, Russia has once again topped a ranking of countries with the highest percentage of women in senior business roles, followed by the Philippines and Lithuania, a report published on Tuesday said.
Japan, where only 7% of senior leadership roles are held by women, remained at the bottom of the list. Germany and India ranked slightly higher, with 15% and 16% of women in senior management, respectively.

France on Friday warmly accepted the offer of a puppy from Russia as a replacement for a police dog named Diesel which was killed during operations after the November 13 terror attacks in Paris.
“The gift from Russian police dog-lovers to their French counterparts… is a very strong and exceptional symbolic gesture on your part,” Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve wrote in a letter to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Kolokoltsev.
The Russian interior minister had offered to send a German shepherd puppy named Dobrynya to replace Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian shepherd.

Russian investigators on Wednesday exhumed the remains of the country’s last emperor Nicholas II and empress Alexandra as part of a new probe into the notorious 1918 slaying of the Romanov family.
A leading investigator involved in the probe, Vladimir Solovyov, told the Echo of Moscow radio station that they had taken “samples from Nicholas II, from the empress, and from the uniform of emperor Alexander II,” the last tsar’s grandfather, who was himself assassinated in 1881.

Deputies of all parliamentary caucuses have backed a proposal by State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin to cut their recently increased salaries as part of the Russian government’s budget optimization.
“I asked all four State Duma factions to discuss the possibility of a salary reduction for parliamentarians. A dozen top ballet stars including Svetlana Zakharova and Natalia Osipova put up a dazzling performance Sunday at a keenly awaited but politically sensitive gala at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in support of young dancers in war-torn Ukraine.
During the benefit organised by The Bolshoi’s Ukrainian-born prima ballerina Zakharova, dancers from top international companies performed highlights from a range of ballets.

A long-awaited day of judgment on World Cup hosts Russia and Qatar turned into another day of FIFA disarray.
Nearly four years after FIFA chose Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the football body’s ethics judge exonerated the two countries of any corruption in their winning bids and cleared them to stage the sport’s showpiece tournament.
