Apple chief Tim Cook announced Apple is creating a fund to get more people in the U.S. to do “advanced manufacturing,” kicking it off with a billion dollars.
Apple investing in high-tech manufacturing in the United States would come as rare common ground with US President Donald Trump, who hammered away at the theme during his campaign for office last year.
“We are creating an advanced manufacturing fund,” Cook said in an interview broadcast on CNBC.
“We are initially putting one billion dollars in the fund.”
Cook pointed out that apple spent more than …

A burst of hiring in April provided a reassuring sign for the U.S. economy and reduced a broader gauge of the job market’s health to its lowest level since the recession began nearly a decade ago.
Employers added 211,000 jobs, more than double the weak showing in March, the Labor Department said Friday . The unemployment rate dipped to 4.4 percent, a 10-year low, from 4.5 percent in March.
Taken as a whole, the April jobs report suggested that American businesses are confident enough in their outlook for customer demand to keep …

The U.S. jobs report for March delivered a mixed message Friday as hiring fell to its weakest pace in nearly a year. Yet at the same time, the unemployment rate reached the lowest level in nearly a decade.
Employers added just 98,000 jobs, the Labor Department said. That was barely half the previous month’s gain and a potential sign of weakening growth. Yet economists largely downplayed the drop, attributing much of it to a snowstorm that hit the Midwest and Northeast just as the government was compiling its hiring data.
The steady …

U.S. President Donald Trump brought two dozen manufacturing CEOs to the White House on Thursday and declared their collective commitment to restoring factory jobs lost to foreign competition.
Yet some of the CEOs suggested that there were still plenty of openings for U.S. factory jobs but too few qualified people to fill them. They urged the White House to support vocational training for the high-tech skills that today’s manufacturers increasingly require — a topic Trump has seldom addressed.
“The jobs are there, but the skills are not,” one executive said during meetings …

The 68-year-old Californian had a change of heart after filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Ms. Wolf was a millionaire whose fortune, built on buying and selling homes, collapsed in the financial crisis. Her bank balance fell to $15.
Ms. Wolf said her debt-repayment plan, which eventually left her with about $1,000 a month to live on, made clear she had to leave Monterey, Calif., the central-coast city where she lived. She looked online, as long as 15 hours a day, for places with a low cost of living. In August, she …

The number of older Americans taking multiple prescription drugs such as tranquilizers, antidepressants, antipsychotics and painkillers has more than doubled in the past decade, researchers say.
The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine raise concerns about risks to senior health, such as falling, and to public safety due to the potential for impaired driving.
Researchers found that in 2004, 0.6 percent of doctor visits by people over 65 involved three or more drugs that affect the central nervous system.
By 2013, that number had risen to 1.4 …

President Donald Trump quickly assumed the mantle of the White House on Friday, making his first executive order one aimed at his predecessor’s signature health care law and swearing-in members of his national security team to his Cabinet.
Hours after delivering a stinging rebuke of the political status quo in his inaugural address, Trump sat at the president’s formal desk in the Oval Office as he signed the order that White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said was aimed at “minimizing the economic burden” of the “Obamacare” law.
The order notes …

Toyota will invest $10 billion in the United States over the next five years, the company said Monday at the annual Detroit auto show.
The announcement comes just days after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump criticized the Japanese manufacturer for a previously-announced relocation of Toyota Corolla production to Mexico.
Toyota will devote a majority of the new investment to improving manufacturing plants, spokeswoman Amanda Sawyer Roark said in an email to AFP.
“This investment also includes our new headquarters in Plano and research into autonomous vehicles and robotics,” she said.
The company declined to …

In a sign of improving cooperation between the U.S. and China to fight the global drug trade, the Drug Enforcement Administration will open a new office there and its top chief will visit next week for the first time in more than a decade.
The DEA said acting administrator Chuck Rosenberg will visit Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong Monday through Thursday, at the invitation of China’s Ministry of Public Security. The last time the head of the DEA visited the country was 2005.

President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious plans to revive exports, return jobs to the United States and increase oil drilling are running up against a home-grown threat:
The surging U.S. dollar.
Since the Nov. 8 election, the dollar has shot up 5 percent. An index that tracks the dollar against other major currencies reached a 14-year high after the election before dipping a bit since then.
In part, the dollar’s gain reflects the U.S. economy’s strength and investor confidence that Trump will accelerate growth by slashing taxes and pumping money into roads, bridges and other …
