Taiwan and Japan to sign bilateral trade agreement

23 September 2011 No Comment

A senior Taiwanese official says Taiwan and Japan will sign an agreement this week to bolster bilateral economic relations.

Wednesday’s statement by Foreign Ministry spokesman James Chang comes amid steadily warming relations between Taipei and Tokyo, following Taiwan’s provision of generous earthquake aid for Japan earlier this year.

Mr Chang says the two sides will sign the agreement on Thursday, but did not offer more details. Japanese and Taiwanese media report the agreement will allow companies from the two sides to enjoy the same benefits as local counterparts when investing in each other’s territories.

Taiwan was a Japanese colony from 1895-1945. The sides have had good ties even after Tokyo switched its diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1972.
