Taiwan stars raise $3.85m for Japan quake relief

19 March 2011 No Comment

A LEGION of Taiwanese entertainers raised about NT$114 million (US$3.85 million) in less than four hours for quake-hit Japan, organisers said on Friday.

Hundreds of local stars joined the fundraiser broadcast live on several channels late on Thursday to call on the Taiwanese public to help Japan quake victims, said co-organiser FTV, a cable channel.

A man, identified only by his surname Chen, who recently won a top lottery prize made the single biggest pledge of Tw$50 million, according to local media.

About 100 local celebrities, led by pop diva A-Mei and Singapore singer Stefanie Sun, are due to appear in another major fundraiser to be broadcast live on Friday night, organisers said.

President Ma Ying-jeou and his wife Chow Mei-ching are also expected to attend the event while Hong Kong star Andy Lau will lend his support in a pre-recorded message, they said. So far the Taiwanese government has pledged NT$100 million for Japan quake relief while many corporations and charity groups have also been collecting donations.

Taiwan was a Japanese colony from 1895 to 1945 and is still heavily influenced by Japanese culture. Many Taiwanese performers have also attempted successful careers in Japan.
